This is unsolicited and just because I like the book very 
much after sinking $$into two other compendiums and learning lots of
stuff the hard way: do yourselves a favor and check-out
"A Practical Guide To Linux" by Mark Sobell. (Addison Wesley).
It's the best most accurate, no-BS book. (~$40)
